Frederick Fleming - b. 1821, D. 1878
My G-G-Grandpa... Frederick Fleming’s burial site located in Hemphill
Cemetery, Jackhorn, Letcher Co., KY. It is believed he was the
first person buried in the cemetery. More than likely he lived
somewhere near his gravesite and choose to be buried on the hill
not far from the homeplace.
|
| Was born in Floyd County, KY. Married Anna Wright somewhere in Pike
County on June 18, 1940. Apparently they lived in both Pike and
Letcher counties for the most of their lives.
|
The part of Floyd county where Fred was born in eventually became Pike County.
It is interesting to note the nickname that has stuck with him through the
years. "Fightin'" Fred Fleming. I guess this says much about him and his
personality. He has a brother known as "Whiskey Bill". This may have been
why Fred was fighting. In their day and time selling moonshine may have
been their livelihood.
Fred received a land grant on May 23, 1846 for 50 acres on Boon Fork of
Letcher County, KY. It is nearly impossible to determine exactly where this
land may have been located. He received the land through a land warrant
and the property was surveyed on the 17th day of February, 1946. The only
identify marks listed in the land warrant is the mention of Boon Fork of the
north fork of the Kentucky River and Camping Hollow. To this day, no one has
identified Camping Hollow. The area could have been very large. Land warrants
sometime only included a few hundred feet along side the riverbed. It was
assumed that the mountains above were included.
Nancy Anna Wright was born in 1820. She is buried in the Johnson Cemetery,
Speight, KY. She passed away on November 18, 1901. She was the daughter of
Joel M. Wright and Susannah. Some believe he father wasn't Joel.
