OCTOBER 14, 2008 - Curwood Potter, Jr., of Jackhorn, Kentucky passed away on Tuesday, October 14, 2008 at his residence.

Curwood was the son of the late Curtis and Alice (Belcher) Potter.

He was born on December 9, 1943, being 64 years, 10 months, and 5 days of age at the time of his passing.

Surviving are his wife: Joyce Ann (Perkins) Potter; one son: Tony Curtis Potter and wife, Felicia Ann of Whitesburg, Kentucky; one sister: Elouis Wilson of McRoberts, Kentucky; two grandchildren: Latisha Nicole and Emily Alene along with a host of other relatives and friends to mourn his passing.

Curwood was preceded in death by four brothers: Harrison Potter; A.C. Potter; Harold Dean Belcher; and Arthur Belcher; one sister: Virginia Cochran.

Funeral services were held at the Hemphill Freewill Baptist church, Jackhorn, Kentucky on Thursday, October 16, 2008 at 1:00 o'clock P.M. Services conducted by Danny Hurst. Concluding servies were at the Haven of Rest Cemetery, Mayking, Kentucky. Arrangements by Letcher Funeral Home, Inc., Whitesburg, KY.

AUGUST 11, 2008 - Ruth Anderson Smith, daughter of the late T.R. and Maggie (Meade) Collier was born in Letcher County, Kentucky, December 22, 1925. She entered eternal life Monday, August 11, 2008 at the Whitesburg Appalachian Regional Hospital in Whitesburg, Kentucky being 82 years, 7 months and 20 days of age at the time of her passing.

Ruth was married to the late Mayo Anderson, who passed away in 1982. Then later married John O. Smith, who also preceded her in death on February 12, 2007. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Whitesburg, Kentucky.

She is survived by her daughter: Sandy Jackson (Ozz) of Whitesburg, Kentucky. One son: Terry Anderson (Pam) of Whitesburg, Kentucky. One half-sister: Billie Joyce Quillen of Cleveland, Ohio. Two step-daughters: shearer K. Goode (Joe) of Cumming, Georgia and Susan A. Vanover (Tim) of Jenkins, Kentucky. One step-son John O. Smith, II (Faye) of Johnson City, TN. Five grandchildren: Michael Jackson of Isom, Kentucky; Sheli Robeson of Lexington, Kentucky; Blake Hall of Whitesburg, Kentucky; Ashley Anderson of Richmond, Kentucky and C.J. Anderson also of Whitesburg, Kentucky.

Also surviving are five great-grandchildren, as well as step grandchildren and step-grandchildren along with a host of other relatives and friends to mourn her passing.

Ruth was also preceded in death by two brothers: Hillard and Daniel Collier.

Funeral services for Ruth Anderson Smith was held at the First Baptist Church, Whitesburg, Kentucky on Thursday, August 14, 2008 at 1:oo o'clock p.m. Officiating ministers were: Tony Brown and Edmon Bolen. Final resting place: Green Acres Cemetery, Ermine, Letcher County, Kentucky. Pallbearers: Family.

JULY 31, 2008 -- Sarah Elizabeth (Tackett) Burke, 89 (April 4, 1919-July 31, 2008), went to be with the Lord on July 31, 2008.

A daughter of Silas and Inas (Cook) Tackett, of McRoberts, Kentucky and the widow of Prentice Arnold Burke. She was a member of the Old Regular Baptist Church at McRoberts, Kentucky for 51 years.

She leaves behind her loving family of two daughters: Barbara Morgan (Jack) and Vivian Sergent (Wayne) both of McRoberts, Kentucky. One daughter-in-law: Allie Burke (Kenneth) of McRoberts, Kentucky. Two sons: Jemmie Ray (Carol) of McRoberts, Kentucky and James Arnold (Shirley) of Irvington, Kentucky. 13 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren. Two sisters: Ollie Sexton and Aileen Meade of Jackhorn, Kentucky. One brother: Burnette Tackett of Deane, Kentucky.

Preceeding her in death was her husband of 60 years, Prentice Arnold Burke; one son: Kenneth Roy Burke; one great-grandson: James Patrick Burke and eight brothers: Lowell Thomas; George Smith; Daniel Van; Johnnie; McKinley; Curtis; Rush and Johnce Tackett.

Visitation was Saturday, August 2nd, 2008 at 6:00 p.m. at the Carty Funeral Home, in Neon, Kentucky. The funeral was held on Sunday, August 3rd, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. at the McRoberts Old Regular Baptist Church. Entombment will follow in the Green Acres Cemetery at Ermine, Kentucky. Officiating minister was Robert Waggoner. Pallbearers were the grandsons.

JULY 22, 2008 - SELMA RILEY - Funeral services for Selma Riley, 86, were held July 26, 2008 at Letcher Funeral Home. Burial was in Green Acres Cemetery at Ermine, Letcher County, Kentucky.

She was a daughter of the late Phillip Henry Sheridan, Sr. and Dessie Virginia Sowders Collier, she died July 22, 2008 at her home at Fleming, Letcher County, Kentucky.

She was the widow of Bill Riley and was a teacher for 34 years, including 30 years at Hemphill Grade School.

Mrs. Riley is survived by a daughter: Anneatta Gail (Riley) Shepherd and husband John, of Neon, Letcher County, Kentucky; two grandchildren: Ollie Loretta Dessie Marie, of Neon, Kentucky and Tiffany Nichole, of Versailles, Kentucky; four sisters: Ruby Holtzclaw, of Jenkins, Kentucky; Zola Faye Vause, of Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin; Betty Jean Salyers and husband Paul Evan, of Dell Valle, Tex.; and Vivian Pauline Butler, of Wise, Va.; and three brothers: Lloyd Collier and wife Alberta, of Dekalb, IL.; Earl Jackson Collier and wife Antonette, of Acton, Mass.; and Phillip Henry Sheridan Collier, Jr. and wife Joyce, of Wise, Va. She was a sister of the late Kermitt Collier and Roy Collier.

JUNE 30, 2008 - Jerry Lee McFall - Funeral services for Jerry Lee McFall, 49, of Vance, AL, were held July 4, 2008 at the Fleming Church of God. Burial was in the Haven of Rest Cemetery at Mayking, Letcher County, Kentucky.

Born in Whitesburg, Kentucky, he was a former Neon resident. He was a son of the late Leslie McFall, Sr. and Lonnie (Hammonds) McFall, and was married to the late Diana Sue (Bentley) McFall. He died on June 30, 2008.

Surviving are three daughters: Jody Gibson and Jamie McFall, both of Tuscaloosa, AL; and Jessie Fleming, Burdine, KY; five grandchildren: Tayler Fleming, Garrett Bentley, Jackson Gibson, Emilee Fleming, and Madalyn Sue Caddis; five sisters: Shelby Paxton and Marlene Sexton, both of Neon, KY; Lola Taylor, Georgetown, KY; Ruth Ann Orman, Dearborne Heights, MI; and Linda Bearrs, Craft's Colly, KY; and two brothers: Leslie McFall, Jr. and Frank Michael McFall, both of Neon, KY.
