Robert Fleming - b. 1772, d. 1852

My G-G-G-Grandpa... Robert Fleming’s, burial site located at the mouth of Burke’s Branch, Myra, Pike Co., KY. Robert Fleming Robert married Elizabeth Stembaugh on September 21st, 1806 in Washington County, MD.
Around 1799-1800 Robert and a good friend, John Killen, boarded a ship and headed for the new world. No one really knows why he was leaving his homeland to never return. Killen immigrated through New York and into North Carolina. Robert eventually journeyed through York county Pennsylvania and into southwest Virginia and then into southeastern Kentucky.

According to an interview of George Fleming by J.E. Sutherland on January 23, 1926, Robert's trip to American took over 9 weeks. Fleming also remembered the dutch couple. Supposedly Elizabeth was of Dutch ancestory.

Robert met and married Elizabeth Stembaugh in Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of Phillip Stumbo. No one really knows the exact place of her grave. Some believe she was buried next to Robert at Burke's branch. Others believe she was buried near the creek in the valley below him.

Records show that Robert served in the War of 1812. He was a private in Capt. David Gooding's Company - 16th Reg. KY Militia from September 10, 1814 to March 10, 1815 - Ft. Malden. Rejoined February 10, 1815 - received one months pay and then was discharged.

Robert's father and mother, William Fleming and Virginia "Jennie" Buchanan, never saw him again after he headed for America. Also there are no records show that either Robert's parents or any of his family ever came to America.

In 1825 Robert received a Kentucky Land Warrant for 100 acres of land located in what was then Floyd County, KY. The 1820 Census of Floyd County shows Robert and family living on Beaver Creek. However in the 1830 census records they were listed in Pike County. This could have been because Pike County was formed out of Floyd in 1821.

Robert died in Pike County on December 17, 1852. He was nearly 80 years old at the time of his death. It is believed he chose the exact spot at the mouth of Burkes Branch on Shelby Creek for his gravesite. On December 15, 1852, only 13 days before his death, he prepared his will that is now recorded in Book A, Page 31, at the Clerk's office in Pike County.
