- A Descendant of Dr. John Stewart -

"STEWART FAMILY HISTORY"

History Of The Stewart Name
Like many other surnames in the mountains the "Stewart" name also has undergone a transition in spelling. Some records show the following spelling variations: Stuart, Stewart, Steward, Stuarte and several others. Many links to the past are only found in census records, and many census records are not accurate.

My Stewart research has been very difficult. From Grandpa "Bob" Stewart back many, many things are not clear. The Stewarts of Pike and Letcher Counties, KY supposed to have descended from Dr. John Stuart/Stewart. He was the first Stewart in our line to enter the U.S. Most believe he was from Scotland, however, evidence has been discovered that shows he may have been from England. Dr. Stewart came into the New York area of the country in the late 1600's. Records show that he was a doctor and a cooper. Also it is believed that this same John Stewart was high sheriff of Monmouth County, New Jersey around 1700. From this section of the U.S. the Stewart migrated into North Carolina, through Virginia and into Kentucky.
