The Johnson County Conservation District is pleased to announce the winners in the 2003 Conservation Writing Contest and the Jim Claypool Conservation Art Contest sponsored by the Conservation District, The Courier-Journal, the Kentucky Farm Bureau Federation and the Kentucky Farm Bureau Insurance. The theme of the contest was “Kentucky’s Wildlife…Rediscovering its Value!” Darcy Porter, a student at Paintsville Middle School, was the winning writing entry for the county. The county runner-up entry was written by Taylor Deskins, a student at W. R. Castle Elementary. Nine area schools participated in the writing contest. Area school winners are Sheyban Spencer from Central Elementary, Morgan Blair from Highland Elementary, Christopher Castle from Porter Elementary, Taylor Deskins from W.R. Castle Elementary, Brooklyn Dawn Samons from Paintsville Elementary, Darcy Porter from Paintsville Middle, Dustin Woods from Paintsville High School, Katie Hutchinson from Our Lady of the Mountain School, and Ashley Clark from Johnson County Christian School. Shelby Loren Rice, a student at Central Elementary designed the winning artwork from our county. Troy Jude from W. R. Castle Elementary was the second place winner. Nine area schools participated in art contest. There were over 1,030 entries in the writing and art contests. School winners in the art contest are Shelby Loren Rice from Central Elementary, Ricky Rigsby from Flat Gap Elementary, Darian Lewis from Meade Memorial Elementary, Troy Jude from W. R. Castle Elementary, Summer Robinson from Highlands Elementary, Chase Lemaster from Porter Elementary, Paula Witten from Paintsville Elementary, Leslie Meade from Our Lady of the Mountains School, and Megan Daniel from Johnson County Christian School. The Courier Journal will award U.S. Savings Bonds to the county winners in writing and art. The two award winning entries were sent on to be judged in the district and state competitions. All top three winners from the schools that participated along with their family members will be invited to a banquet to honor their accomplishments on Thursday, March 25th, 2004 at the Ramada Inn in Paintsville. Area students explored Kentucky’s diverse and numerable wildlife to write and create art work. Historical concepts of the wildlife diversity two hundred years ago as compared to today and the impact population has had on wildlife was also studied. Kentucky is home to more than 760 different species of mammals, birds, reptiles, fish and amphibians. This amazing statistic comes from the varied habits available across the state from forests, wetlands, grasslands, rivers, steams and lakes to agricultural land and urban areas. The Johnson County Conservation District Board of Supervisors congratulates all participants. The District appreciates all the work the students and their teachers did to make this year’s contest a success. |
